Encino Elementary Recycling Program

Our recycling program in the lunch pavilion is in full swing and is already making a big difference!

Each week we fill up two city blue bins with various recyclables: carton trays, milk and juice cartons, "lunchables" trays and boxes, styrofoam bowls and cups, plastic utensils, and straws.

Separately, we collect plastic drink bottles and aluminum cans for CASH. We are also taking all drink pouches, such as Capri Sun and Honest Kids, out of the trash stream! Each week we collect about 250-300 pouches. When we have more than 2000 we ship them off to Terracycle, which recycles and upcycles them. For every shipment our school will receive CASH! Our 4th & 5th grade student council has chosen to help out with the drink pouch collection effort and will be involved with how this money will be spent.

You are invited to bring in any drink pouches you consume at home in order to speed up our collection process. If you participate, please adhere to the following guidelines:

• empty the pouches completely
• remove the straw (can be recycled)
• flatten the pouches and press out any remaining juice
• when you are ready to take them in, place them into a plastic bag, compress them and close the bag tightly
• please double bag it to prevent insect problems during storage
• drop the bag into the designated collection bin near Lost & Found in the lunch area.

Thanks for your participation!
